A Hummer of a Story

Today is our last full day in Martinique.  For the past 28 days I've maintained the hummingbird feeder that resides near the pool, about 20 feet from the outside table that we sit at to eat and do our pc work.  Since yesterday the feeder has been empty, for the first time.

We were low on sugar, and I thought it might be a good idea to have the hummers look for natural food.  I have no idea if the next occupants will refurbish the feeder on a regular basis.

The hummers don't normally come around us, nor are they threatened by our close proximity.  Sometimes I stroll as close as 5 feet from the feeder to observe them.  If I am still, they will continue to feed from the four openings, not seeing me as a threat.  That is the only time I get really close to them.

Until this morning.  With the feeder empty for about 36 hours, one of the hummingbirds flew towards the table I was sitting at.  No more than 10 feet away at a height of about 10 feet, he fluttered those wings and just looked at me.  Hovering in place.  He stayed there until I got up.

I got the message.  To the kitchen to prepare one last batch.  Amazing.
